Final exam review- chapters 1, 2, 7, 12, 15, 16. The connecion between theory and research : form of theory, relaionship between data and theory. Theory- an explanaion of observed regulariies or paterns. Theories are composed of interrelated and usually veriiable statements of proposiions. Hypothesis an informed speculaion, which is set up to be tested, about the possible relaionship between two or more variables. 3 common components of a theory: deiniions- specify what the key terms in the theory mean, descripions- outline the characterisics of the phenomena of interest, relaional statements- connects two or more variables. Relaional statements come in 2 forms: determinisic- two variables always go together in a paricular way, probabilisic- two variables go together with some degree of regularity but the relaionship between is not inevitable. 2 diferent ways to go about acquiring knowledge: deducive approaches: most common approach. Theory > hypotheses > data collecion > indings > hypotheses conirmed or rejected > revision of theory.
