Document Summary

Open system- system that receive inputs of energy, matter and produce. Closed system- system that receives inputs and produce energy, but not outputs of both matter. Feedback loops- a systems output can serve as an input to that same system. Negative feedback loop- output that results from a system moving in one direction acts as input that move the system in the other direction. Input and output essentially neutralize one another"s effect, stabilizing the system. Positive feedback loops- rather than stabilizing a system, they drive further toward one extreme or another. Dynamic equilibrium- when a process within a system move in opposing directions at equilibrium rates so that their effect balance out. Homeostasis- the tendency of system to maintain constant or stable internal conditions. Resistance- strength of system"s tendency to remain constant. Resilience- a measure of how readily a system will return to its original state after being disturbed.
