Document Summary
Agriculture is the practise of raising crops and livestock for human use and consumption. People obtain most of our food, bre and biofuels from cropland, land used to raise plants for human use, and rangeland, land used for grazing livestock. Almost 1 billion people don"t get enough to eat on a regular basis and approximately 1 billion people are overweight or obese. Too little and too much food are both problematic from a global perspective: malnutrition = unbalanced diet (shortage or excess of required nutrient) malnutrition can lead to disease. Vitamin a de ciency, which can lead to blindness, is a common type of malnutrition in parts of the developing world: undernourished = too few calories on a chronic basis. People from developing countries: over nourished = too many calories on an ongoing basis. (developed countries) Diseases of malnutrition: marasmus: severe de cit of energy, protein & carbohydrates, kwashiorkor: protein & micronutrient de ciency.
