ENG205H5 Chapter Notes - Chapter article: Systems Theory, World Tourism Organization, Sustainable Tourism
Document Summary
International tourism: tourism activity by individuals outside their country of residence. Described as a "phenomenon", meaning it"s an observable event or occurrence. Tourism involves the study of places visited by tourists - where tourism is consumed - and of the factors and conditions in the places where tourists live - where the demand for tourism is created. Derived from greek and latin words meaning to turn or to circle and in the context of a journey means a trip that ends in the same place it began. An activity located within the framework of leisure and recreation because traditionally tourism was understood as a holiday. However, while holidays represents one use of leisure time, not all tourism is for leisure purposes. Suggested that the focus on holidays has created a perception of tourism as a superficial and pleasurable activity and delayed its recognition as a serious economic sector and subject of academic study.
