Boys usually outperform girls in gross motor skills. Increased myelination of the central nervous system is reflected in the improvement of fine motor skills during middle and late childhood. Complex, intricate and rapid movements needed to produce fine-quality crafts or play can be mastered. Girls usually outperform boys in fine motor skills. Physical activity is linked positively to physical, socio-emotional and cognitive development. It fosters creativity, problem solving, executive brain functioning, academic performance, self esteem and social skills. For the most part of middle and late childhood, children have excellent health. Disease and death are less likely during this stage. A healthy diet promotes normal growth and development and contributes to overall health. Parents play an important role in preventing children from becoming overweight and helping them lose weight if they become overweight.
