Looters destroyed the preserved native american monument and turned it into a wasteland. Archaeologists moved quickly to salvage what they could once they found out about the destruction. By the time most of the site was demolished. Human burials are prized targets for looters often contain objects of tremendous appeal to art collectors and antiquities. The dead are buried with objects reflecting their roles in life. There is now state level legislation to protect burial sites such as the slack fam. No archaeological site can tell us about all aspects of ancient society. Many native americans do not want the remains of their families disturbed in any way.
