Secular rituals: sorority or fraternity initiations, which have no connection to the supernatural realm. Often performed annually to mark a seasonal milestone such as planting or harvesting or to commemorate an important event. Non-periodic rituals: occur irregularly, at unpredictable ties, in response to unscheduled events: drought or flood, to mark events in a person"s life, such as illness, infertility, birth, marriage, or death. A ritual that marks a change in status from one light stage to another; also called rite of passage. Victor turner"s three phases: the initiate (the person undergoing the ritual) is separated physically, socially, and symbolically from normal life. Special dress may mark the separation: the transition, or liminal, phase is when the person is no longer in the previous status but is not yet a member of the next stage.
