Document Summary
Contemporary studies focus largely on the concept of power. Antonio gramsci believed there were 2 types of poliical control: 1 dominaion. Direct physical/violent control exerted by military/police for social control: 2 hegemony. Socieies dominant ideas are those of the ruling class which help mask social inequaliies. Gramsci noted that there are 2 parts of the superstructure: the state (police, military, government, the civil society (schools, media, religion, trade, etc. ) Through these the populaion internalizes the rulings classes ideas & consents. The ruling class occasionally incorporates part of the culture of the subordinate"s class to ensure they do not feel totally oppressed and coninue to consent to the ruling classes ideas.
