Dr. samuel george morton of philadelphia was the most distinguished scientist in north america. Morton collected and measures human skulls that have been collected by members of different races: believed the bigger the brain was, the smarter they were, wanted to draw conclusions about the average brain size of different races. Morton found that the races ranking highest in social hierarchy had the biggest brains: whites of european origin, then asian, then native north americans, lastly the blacks. There are three main issues comprised of morton"s findings: morton claimed to be able to distinguish the skulls of white and black people by the shapes of the skulls. Since it is not possible to do so, morton"s sorting of skulls is invalid: morton"s skulls formed a small unrepresentative sample of 72 skulls, morton"s racial samples ere incomparable with respect to gender.
