Sociology ch 5 lecture social structure. Provides framework within which we interact with others. Through you and i develop a self-concept as each of us learns the attitudes, values, and behaviours of people around us. Creates boundaries that define persons and groups as insiders , Social structure gives us the ability to interpret the social situations we encounter. Society defined position in a group or society characterized by certain expectations, rights, and duties. Exist independently of people; refers to all socially defined positions. Status set: all the statuses that a person occupies. Master status: most important status a person occupies. Role: set of behavioural expectations associated with a given status. Societies definition of how people should act. When two roles conflict with each other, most people have more than one role. Many people asked to do more than one role at the same time (must study for midterm but have to work the night before role as student & employee)
