Introduction: the life course can be conceptualized as the flow of lives through time, gennep was the first to use the organising principle of the life course. The approach depends on how the life experiences are understood and its priority. They are quantitative based and involve large samples. They are followed up by regular intervals: qualitative longitudinal: roots in anthropology and ethnography, they use in-depth situated inquiry and a combination of case history and temporal analysis to view how lives unfold. The designs are flexible with intensive tracking following the persons through changes even across decade time periods. Theoretical approaches: early on, the life course is defined as macrodynamic terms that are socially defined and institutionally regulated sequences that are reinforced by norms. It takes into consideration the subjective framing and crafting of the life journey across time and place. Within contemporary life, generational categories are fluid as everything expands.
