Diagnosis: process of determining whether a presenting problem meets the established criteria for a specific psychological disorder. The clinician begins by collecting a lot of information across a broad range of the individuals functioning to determine where the source of the problem my lie. By ruling out problems in some areas and concentrating on areas that seem most relevant. This includes instructions for administering the measure, evaluating its findings and comparing these to data for large numbers of people. The clinical interview, the core of most clinical work is used by psychologists, psychiatrists and other mental health professionals. The interview gathers information on current and past behaviours, attitudes and emotions as well as a detailed history of the individuals life in general and of the presenting problem.
