Chapter seven (p. 229-266): community, culture, and the media. Sense of community: the feeling that close connection and shared purpose that unites the person with others in a group. Athletics in adolescence improves physical tness, coordination, motivation, self-control, discipline, and self- esteem. Canadian children agreed it is a good idea to admit to a bad and a good deed. Chinese children said it is good to not admit to a good deed, to be more humble and lie instead of taking credit. Re ects the cultures appreciation of humbleness and self effacement. Cross-cultural research: placing individuals from different cultures through the same task. We need to use caution when interpreting results: Task or question may not have the same meaning cross-culturally. We have to be careful of concluding that one thing is better than the other. Teens from lower ses use media more, including television and video games but not the computer.
