Group: collection of 3 or more people who interact with one another and are interdependent in the sense that their needs and goals cause them to rely on one another. Why people join groups: forming relationships with other people fulfills a number of basic human needs. Important role in defining who we expect to be in the future. Important role in motivating people to become involved in social change. Boss and employee are expected to act indifferent ways in that setting: can be helpful because people know what to expect about each other, costs: can get into a role that their personal identity and personality are lost. Prisoner and guard (zimbardo): quickly assumed roles, became abusive or passive: factors contributed to high levels of obedience, unable to resist social influences in powerful situations. Simple tasks improve in the presence of others: condition: had to solve maze that led to darkened box.
