Developmental psychology examines our physical, cognitive and social development across the lifespan. Three major issues: nature and nurture, continuity and stages- is development gradual or abrupt, stability and change- which traits stay the same or change. Inner cell become the embryo and outer cells become the placenta. Teratogens- agents i. e. viruses or drugs that can damage the embryo or fetus. Drinking during pregnancy: depresses the cns, a liking in the womb and alcohol dependence in teens. Fas- misproportional head, brain abnormalities linked to epigenetics. From age 3 to 6 the most rapid growth was in your frontal lobes enables rational planning. 90% of children can walk by 15 months. Cognition: refers to all the mental activities associated with thinking, knowing, remembering and communicating. Assimilate- we interpret new experiences in terms of our current understandings (schemas) Accommodate-adapting our current understandings to incorporate new information. Experiencing the world through senses and actions (hearing, looking, touching etc)
