PHI 2396 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Lifesaving, Bicycle Helmet, Paternalism

69 views1 pages

Document Summary

Some degree of paternalism is necessary in the world because people who may not be fully educated on things like safety for example should be told on how to be safe. For example not wearing a bicycle helmet is illegal for a person under the age of 18, so is not wearing a seatbelt in a car for any person. These legislations are in effect because people have studied the risks of not preforming these simple tasks. Where i begin to nd some degree of injustice with paternalism is the way it is de ned. This implies it is less of a big deal to take away the remaining autonomy of someone of whose it is diminished than that of someone who has plentiful autonomy. This shows our society values intellect, which is the basis of decision making, over the basic human right of autonomy.
