Anxiety: both has psychological & physical compononents; treatment: psychotherapy or drug therapy. Psychological component: fear, apprehension, dread & uneasiness. Physical component: tachycardia, palpitations, trembling, dry mouth, sweating, weakness, fatigue, & shortness of breath. Anxiety can serve an adaptive function in certain situations. Anxiety disorders often respond well to treatment either psychotherapy, drug therapy (table 35-1), or both. Ocd: obsessive-compulsive + related disorder; ptsd: trauma-&stressor-related disorder, not anxiety. Characteristics - dsm-5 diagnostic criteria for generalized anxiety disorder: Excessive anxiety & worry that occur 6 months; worry is difficult to control; chronic condition. 3 or more of the following: restlessness or feeling keyed up or on edge, being easily fatigued, difficulty concentrating or mind going blank, muscle tension, sleep disturbance (difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, restlessness, unsatisfying sleep) Loss of functioning: anxiety, worry, or physical symptoms may cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, other important functioning areas.
