Disability of an individual has meaning and rami cations for the entire family: children with disabilities. Sociology of acceptance: attributing thinking to the other, seeing individuality on the other, viewing the other as reciprocating, de ning a social place for the other. Parents set the tone for the role of the disability in the family. Positive perceptions of their children with disabilities, their attributions and behaviours are more positive. When parental perceptions are negative, effects are negative (more often due to a low level of marital satisfaction than to the disability itself) Conspiracy of silence: can lead the child to the conclusion that disability is a bad thing if it is unmentionable. Adolescence: adolescents with disabilities may have to be given independence deliberately: human rights of children with disabilities. Right 1: to be told the truth and to own the story of their disability. Allow for separateness in views of disability, increasing turn tasks over to the child.
