Document Summary

Chapter 9 summary mass consumption and technology in daily life. Technology & environment in north american history (pages: 161-175) by jean-louis trudel. By the early 20th century, people"s expectations were raised due to technology. Edison made recording devices for businessmen but instead had to alter his target audience and focused on sound production for entertainment. 1887 berliner created a flat disc that outlasted edison"s cylinder (that registered only 4 minutes in 1909) Long-playing records were developed after wwii and were the last of the analog technology pioneered by edison in 1877. Edison developed the kinetoscope to watch movies back in 1893 but did not make international patents on his device. Lumiere brothers developed a projector for movies in 1895. First short movies were about 1 minute long. Phonographs brought people inside the home and movies drew them out. 1905, nickelodeons became 1st specialized movie theatres. 1 ticket would get you 4-5 20minute films.
