Essentialism = belief that people or phenomena have an underlying & changing essence. Symbol of what a women is, and it doesn"t shock us because it"s an idea that correlates to who women are. If it was a man, it would shock us. Essence of essentalizing because there is an underlying meaning to a certain thing. Each part of the binary depends on the other for it"s identity. Multiple masculinities: not one form of masculinities, depends on the cultural and the historic context. Hierarchies of masculinities: certain kinds of masculine performance are put above others. Hegemonic masculinity: hegemony = economic, social and or cultural dominance of one group over another w/out the overt use of force, connected to ideology; use images and presentations in order to dominate, not static = dynamic. Active construction of masculinity: activities we do in society, active role, think about how guys approach guys when they see each other in the hallways.
