Document Summary
Media research is the systematic and scienti c investigation of communication processes and effects that often bases its explorations on theories of media and communication. Media research methodology or how research is carried out uses quantitative tools and statistical analysis of data, (e. g. surveys and experiments) or it can involve critical studies using qualitative methods (e. g. ethnography or focus groups) During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries thanks largely to industrialization, the new demands of factory work led to to many changes that caused people to ght for a more democratic environment. Elites tried to come up with various reasons opposing the movement and said the masses were mostly uneducated, unintelligent and lacking in culture so they wouldn"t be able to rule themselves. Others opposed saying that more participation, greater distribution of wealth and better education were necessary to create a more democratic and just society. Film was starting to be recognized as an important medium of mass communication.
