CRM 3314 Chapter Notes -Pragmatism, Methadone
Document Summary
Decriminalization: suggest that small amounts of certain drugs are legal and the idea is that you can then focus law enforcement efforts and resources on serious offences, organized crime etc, not going to stop, people are always involved, doesn"t matter if drugs are deemed illegal or illicit, focus needs to be lessening the harms associated with drug use (main objective, risks associated from use come from prohibition and criminalization, harms associated with use, and harms with the fact that these are criminalized activities. Legalization: monitor things that make drugs risky, like purity, quality etc, could tax drugs as a commodity, government could obtain revenue, regulate drugs and their effects, rather than making it a criminal justice problem, assess risks, make better decisions about drug use, abstinence based discourses don"t work, use concept of pleasure for why certain drugs should be outlawed.
