CLA 2323 Chapter Readings: Midterm 2
Document Summary
Sister and consort of zeus: worshipped at sanctuaries throughout the greek world, especially the temple on the island of samos and argos and mycenae. She tricked semele into precipitating her own death by asking to see zeus in the fullness of his cosmic power. She then drove dionysos, semele"s son, mad, and caused two mortals (athamas and ino) who nursed the infant god to murder their own children in fits of insanity. She received mysterious approaches from zeus; then she was banished from her home by her father, the river-god inachos; finally, she was persecuted by hera, in whose argive temple she had been serving as priestess. She was turned into a cow, either vindictively by hera, or by zeus to disguise her from. After wandering the world in search of her daughter, she comes at last to eleusis, between athens and megara: disguised as an old woman, she receives hospitability from king keleos.
