Debate between hydrothermal vents theory and the lightning strike theory. Complex molecules can have more functions b/c whole is greater than sum of parts. Allows for self-replication because one macromolecule can direct assembly of a new molecule. Molecules that could replicate and were more stable would survive. High concentration of ions and components, not high outside. Developed metabolic pathways to develop more complicated molecules using abundant precursors. Prokaryote --> no enclosed organelles, unicellular, sometimes colonial, simple. Cytoplasm is not homogeneous, it is complex and has regions. Can better adapt to extremes because of simplicity. Viruses --> not living, no metabolic pathways to reproduce outside of host cells. Eukarya maybe have an origin of an association between archaea and eubacteria. Has genetic material of archaea origin, but resemble size and shape of eubacteria. Richard dawkins - trial and error over time. Evolution has no goal, it is based on random changes, dependant on conditions.
