In tantrism there was encouragement of the development of images of deities such as the bodhisattva avalokiteshvara. Bodhisattva are compassionate beings that are well on the path of enlightenment but have decided to stay on earth to help others on their path. They are often seen with one foot on the ground to connect them to the earth and to allow them to stand up quickly and one hand out to help. They are also often still wearing proper clothing and jewelry.
