He believed that art was becoming better over time and was reaching a climax, coining the term "high renaissance" In 1483 he was contracted to paint an alter piece for the chapel in the church of san francesco grande now known as the virgin of the rocks. He uses techniques such as chiaroscuro (the use of lights and darks to enhance 3d figures) and sfumato (subtle transitions between light and dark) He later goes onto paint the last supper and the mona lisa. He believed that colour was secondary to the depiction of volume. He sought out perfect proportion of human anatomy, in doing so he created the vitruvian man: raphael ( While leonardo was painting the mona lisa (1505), raphael was growing.
