Wealthy merchants became common, having risen to power on their own rather than acce wealth from hereditary succession. Economic growth paved the pathway for a wealthier middle class. In this time period, realism came into effect in paintings. Gothic style came into effect in the later half of the century. Since women could not be a formal apprentice during this time, many of them learnt to pa under their husbands and fathers. Popular in this time period were cut away houses so one could see both inside and outside structure at the same time, small houses and trees in proportion to the people, and the use high horizon line.
