Document Summary

The bones of the limbs and their girdles. Each limb is composed of 3 major segments operated by moveable joints. Consists of the clavicle and the scapula. The distal ends of the clavicle meet the sternum laterally. Scapulae fail to complete the ring posteriorly b/c medical borders do not join the axial skeleton. Scapulae are attached to the thorax and vertebral column only by the muscles that clothe their surface. Allow high degree of user limb mobility. The socket of the shoulder joint is shallow and poorly reinforced which contributes to the mobility of the humerus. Cone shaped at the medial / sternal end and attaches to the manubrium. Medial 2/3 is convex, lateral 1/3 approaching the scapula is concave. Has anchoring points for ligaments connecting it to the scapula. Not very strong and likely to fracture. Shape makes it so that fractures go outward, not to injure the subclavian artery.
