ANP 1105 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Extracellular Fluid, Solution, Walter Bradford Cannon
Document Summary
Intracellular fluid is the fluid contained within all the cells of the body and accounts for about. 67% of all the fluid in the body. Extracellular fluid is the fluid present in the blood and in the spaces surrounding cells. 20% - 25% of extracellular fluid is in the fluid portion of blood (plasma) 75% - 80% of extracellular fluid is in the interstitial fluid (fluid in between cells) The total volume of ecf is the sum of the plasma and interstitial volumes. Water accounts for about 55% - 60% of body weight in an adult. Ecf is considered to have a homogenous solute composition. Fluids are enclosed in compartments that are defined and maintained by barriers. The properties of barriers determine which substances can move between compartments, which account for the differences in composition of the different compartments. E. g. : plasma membranes surround each cell to separate the intracellular and extracellular fluids.
