ANP 1105 Chapter Notes - Chapter 14: Postganglionic Nerve Fibers, Somatic Nervous System, Sympathetic Nervous System
Document Summary
Definition: the ability of the body to maintain relatively stable internal conditions even though there is continuous change in the outside world. Not unchanging (trying to keep everything balanced) a dynamic state of equilibrium: adequate blood levels of vital nutrients, heart activity/blood pressure monitored & adjusted when needed, getting rid of waste, maintaining body temperature. The output shits off the original effect of the stimulus or reduces its intensity. Reduces or shuts off stimulus (2 options): 1 hormone or neural pathway regulating process, regulated in opposite directions by 2 different hormones or neural pathways. The goal is to prevent sudden and severe changes. The response of mechanism enhances original stimulus the output if further stimulated. The change occurs in the same direction as the original response. Often referred to as cascades , since the mechanism may be self-perpetuating and once started, they have an amplifying (or waterfall) effect. Most diseases are seen as a disturbance of homeostasis (homeostatic imbalance)
