ADM 2372 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Local Area Network, Virtual Private Network, Application Service Provider
Document Summary
Telecommunication systems enable the transmission of data over public or private networks. A network is a communications, data exchange, and resource-sharing system created by linking two or more computers and establishing standards, or protocols, so that they can work together. A network provides two principal benefits: the ability to communicate and the ability to share. A local area network (lan) is designed to connect a group of computers in close proximity to each other as in an office building, a school, or a home. A wide area network (wan) spans a large geographic area, such as a state, province, or country. A metropolitan area network (man) is a large computer network usually spanning a city. An internet service provider (isp) is a company that provides individuals and other companies access to the internet along with additional related services, such as website-building. Common isp features are web hosting, availability, and support.
