Conflict: opposition, contention or strife; a fighting or struggle for mastery. According to freud, life itself is a continuing saga of conflict. The conscious rational ego must balance the opposing parts of the psyche and reconcile primitive biological urges with the demands presented by civilized society. Social conflict: conflict among people; interpersonal, intergroup, or intragroup conflict. Approach-approach conflict: a type of conflict in which two desirable things are wanted, but only one option can be chosen. Avoidance-avoidance conflict: one is faced with two equally unattractive alternatives. Approach-avoidance conflict: there are attractive and unattractive aspects to both choices involved. Dysfunctional conflict: type of fighting or struggle for mastery that hinders group performance and upsets personal psychological functioning. Functional conflict: conflict that is productive and leads to improvement or innovation. Interactionist perspective: view that conflict can contribute to innovation, creativity, energy and growth. Enables us to become aware of problems within relationships. Energizing and can motivate us to deal with immediate problems.
