PSYC 2050U Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Multipolar Neuron, Unipolar Neuron, Axon Terminal
Document Summary
The nervous system contains several types of cells. Neurons are the most important cells of the nervous system and are arranged in neural circuits that underlie all forms of behaviour, from simple reflexes to complex cognition. Glial cells are found in the human brain and provide support functions but also participates in information processing. Ramon y cajal showed that : the neurons and other cells of the brain are structurally, metabolically, and functionally independent, information is transmitted from neuron to neuron across tiny gaps called synapses. Input zone cellular extensions called dendrites receive input from other neurons" synapses. Integration zone the neuron"s cell body receives the synaptic inputs and integrates the information in order to determine whether or not to out a signal of its own. Conduction zone the axon carries the neuron"s own electrical signals away from the cell body towards its axon collaterals. Output zone axon terminals transmit the neuron"s signals across synapses to other cells.
