Divorce act 1968 -no federal divorce law in canada. Broadened grounds for divorce to include mental & physical cruelty/desertion. 1986 -act was amended again to make "breakdown of marriage" sole ground for divorce. Couples could divorce after one year"s separation, & no longer requirement to prove "fault" by either spouse. 1961 -divorce was uncommon, affecting 36/100,000 married persons. 1969 -year after introduction of divorce act, no. of divorces 2x from 55/100,000 to 124. Divorce rate peaked in 1987 after 1986 amendment at 362/100,000 population. Dramatic increase in divorce rates after 1960s been associated w/ liberalisation of divorce laws, shift in societal makeup (incl. increase of women entering workforce), marital breakdowns in large cohort of baby boomers. Decrease in divorce rates -attributed to 2 probable factors: Increase in age @ which people get married. Increased level of education among those who marry. Marital problems can be related to stress-financial stress.
