Sociology: first said by august comte (1798-1857), believed discipline had the potential to bring together all sciences and improve society, understand social change and how it works, studied systematically. Society: largest-scale human group that shares a common geographic territory and common institutions, not the same as states, based on and requires social interaction between members. Socialization: interaction between society members, teach written and unwritten rules and values of society, monitor and regulate each other. Culture: system of behaviour, beliefs, knowledge, practices, values, materials, shape how we behave and physical elements of society. Dominant culture: able to impose its values, beliefs, and behaviours on a given society because of its political and economic power. Counterculture: group that rejects elements of the dominant culture. Subcultures: differ from dominant culture but don"t oppose it the same as countercultures. High culture: the culture of a society"s elite, may be difficult without having been taught to enjoy and understand it (ie. opera, classical music)
