Health behaviours- behaviours undertaken by people to enhance or maintain their health or behaviours that compromise health. Primary prevention- instilling good health habits and changing poor ones taking measures to combat risk factors for illness before an illness ever has a chance to develop. 1: delay time of death, increasing individual longevity & general life expectancy of population, practice of good health behaviours may extend number of years during which a person may enjoy life free from complications of chronic disease. Age: health behaviours with age & type of health behaviour: health habits typically start out good in childhood, deteriorate in adolescence & young adulthood, improve again among retired adults under 73 but may deteriorate among those 73+ Values: heavily influence practice of health habits: ex. exercise for women may be considered desirable in one culture but undesirable in another, exercise patterns among women will differ greatly between cultures.
