Economic perspectives identifies the roots of much intergroup hostility in competing interests that can set groups apart from another. Motivational perspective emphasizes the psychological needs that lead to intergroup conflict. Economic element drove the cognitive element causing people to perceive these minority groups as fundamentally different from themselves. This cognitive then fed into motivational element of anger over wealth of minority groups. Stereotypes: beliefs that certain attributes are characteristic of members of particular groups - can be positive, negative, true or false -> way of categorizing people. Prejudice refers to an attitudinal and affective response toward a group and its individual members. Possible to be positively prejudiced - involves prejudging others because they belong to a specific category. Discrimination refers to negative or harmful behaviour direct toward members of a particular group - unfair treatment.
