Stress is a process of appraising and responding to threatening or challenging events. Stress can be appraised as a threat stressed to distraction: or appraised as challenge response is aroused and focused. Extreme stress is harmful to physical health. Stressors; the things we respond to: catastrophes: unpredictable large-scale events, significant life changes: life transitions; leaving home, marriage etc. Those who go through divorce or job less are more vulnerable to disease: daily hassles: phone connection, long lines, traffic. Economic problems and racism: when prolonged, stress takes a toll on our health and cardiovascular system. Bad when we are in constant resistance phase, lack of any more ways to cope and body exhausts. Tend and befriend: give and seek support during times of crisis. Woman tend to respond to stress with nurturing whereas men withdraw socially and become aggressive. Health psychology: psychology"s contribution to behaviour medicine.
