Document Summary
First psychology experiment performed by wundt seeking to measure the atoms of the mind . Early school of thought promoted by wundt and titchner: focused on the structure of the human mind. Titchner believed in self-reflective introspection (looking inward) but it required intelligent and verbal people who could express their feelings: as introspection waned, structuralism did as well. Wundt and titchner focused on inner sensations and james consciousness calling pyschology the science of mental life . James emphasized functions of emotions, memories, habits, etc. Women in the late 19th to 20th century were not equal to their male counterparts. Calkins earned her ph. d. requirements and top grades but was refused her degree by her university: she later became a distinguished memory research and the first female president of american psychological association. Washburn also wrote an influential book and thesis but could not join an all-male organization of experimental psychologists.
