Document Summary
Awareness of ourselves & our environment (internal & external stimuli) Attention: divided: ability to do >1 thing at same time, selective: focus conscious awareness on 1 stimulus & excludes other. Mind wandering: mind drifts off to something irrelevant, more likely when stimulus is less attention demanding. Cognitive viewpoint: consciousness & unconsciousness: complementary forms of info processing. Automatic vs. controlled processing: automatic: little/no conscious effort- routine or well-learned (e. g. breathing, controlled: voluntary use of attention & conscious effort (e. g. studying) Wavelengths: beta waves: alert phase of consciousness, alpha waves: relaxed phase of consciousness, theta: early stages of sleep, delta waves: deeper stages of sleep. Jet lag: clock time changes, biological time does not (better to fly west) Screen & sleep: melatonin: hormone that causes sleepiness, blue light: tells body not to create melatonin (screens & natural light) Improvement: less brightness & exposure time (>30 min before bed time, different wavelength (yellow/orange light is better)
