An earthquake struck tan cheng on july 25, 1668. 6 years of shortage, once in each of those 12 years in tan cheng there would be a serious famine as well. Feng lived in tan cheng for 5 years. Came there as a magistrate in 1668 but was dismissed after 2 years. Ashamed to return to his home in shao-wu, fukien, he earned money from his writing he was a chin-shish, holder of the highest literary degree. He focussed on the miseries of the area, the poverty of its people, and the general inability of the local gentry he was fascinated by the statistics of disaster in the county. Population in tan cheng in the early 1670"s was approximately only 1/4 of what it has been in the later ming dynasty 50 years before. There had been well over 200,000 people in county, there now were about 60,000.
