(by james k. boyce): Wider inequalities tend to result in higher levels of environmental harm --> this is because with larger social stratification, the richer people tend to exploit the environment in order to fulfill their economic objectives. Thus, we need to protect the natural environment and social inequality. Country suffering from famine and poverty --> this is not because of the lack of food, but rather inventory hoarding my high ranking officials. Impoverished communities had no harm to the environment. This is because their lifestyles were adapted to minimal environmental waste, limited chemical usage in farming practices and usage of sustainable materials. The poor were herded and re-located to the outskirts. Environmental harm: impacts on the natural environment that will also reduce human well being (which should be looked at broadly, and encompass a wide range of values and rights)
