Sx are viewed as an expression of a set of habits/patterns within a family. Client problem may be a sx of how the system functions, nut just a sx of the individual"s maladjustment, history, psychosocial development. Family is viewed as a functioning unit that"s more than the sum of the roles of its various members. Look at trans generational meanings, rules, cultural and gender perspectives within the system and even larger systems affecting the family. Client"s systemic affiliations and interactions have more power in the persons life than a single therapist could ever hope to have. Understand the person as specifically embedded in larger systems. Eg. would be interested in how one"s depression affects others in the family and how it influences family process. Development of family systems therapy and personal development of the family therapist. Family constellation and birth order (what position client perceives self to be in) All behavior is purposeful motivated by desire to belong.
