Deterministic -- determined by irrational forces unconscious motivations biological and instinctual drives. Aimed at reducing tension, avoiding pain, gaining pleasure. Psychic energy is limited and distributed between these 3; one system takes control of available e at the expense of the others. Dreams: symbolic representations of unconscious needs, wishes and conflicts. Things (needs, motivations, etc. ) that are inaccessible/out of awareness and out of conscious control: aim of therapy is to make the unconscious motives conscious so that one can exercise choice. These are at the center of neurotic symptoms and behaviors so in therapy, these should be revealed and worked with through transference distortions. Feeling of dread from repressed feelings, memories, desires and experience that emerge to the surface of awareness. State of tension that motivates us to do something. Moral anxiety* fear of own conscience (eg. ppl with well developed conscience may feel guilty when they do something contrary to their moral code)
