Nervous system receive + process impulses from external / internal environments. Chp 3 nervous system: explain the classification of the nervous system. Initiate appropriate response: central nervous system (cns, peripheral nervous system (pns, somatic nervous system, visceral (autonomic) nervous system. Sensory/ afferent nerve fibres carry info towards cns. Motor/ efferent nerve fibres carry info away from cns: identify the main components of the central nervous system. Process incoming sensory + outgoing motor messages. Components (brain + spinal cord) enclosed + protected by bony cavities. Cluster of nerve cell bodies of cns = nucleus. Cluster of nerve cell bodies outside of cns = ganglion. Anecephaly: absence of a major part of brain, skull + scalp during embryonic development. In newborns, extend to liii, but stops at age 4-5. 2 enlargements on cervical + lumbar regions: cervical enlargement: gives rise of nerves innervating the, lumbar (lumbosacral) enlargement: supply nerves to lower limbs upper limbs. Spinal tapers down to form conus medullaris.
