Dna transmits genetic info from one generation to the next. A dna strand consists of subunits called nucleotides. The 5-carbon sugar & phosphate groups form the backbone of the nucleotide. Each sugar is linked to the phosphate group of the neighbouring nucleotide. The phosphate group attached to the 5" carbon has 2 o atoms w/ negative charges. The free hydroxyl group are ionized by the loss of a proton = negatively charged. Each base is linked to the 1" carbon of the sugar. Nucleoside w/ 1, 2, or 3 phosphate groups = nucleoside mono/di/triphosphate. Nucleoside triphosphate is important for forming nucleotide polymers: dna & rna. Dna is a linear polymer of nucleotides linked by phosphodiester bonds. Phosphodiester bond: the c-o-p-o-c linkage that connects the 3" carbon of one nucleotide to the 5" carbon of the next nucleotide through the 5" phosphate group.
