Document Summary
The cell is to biologists what the atom is to physicists (and chemists) Essential parts of life are understood through cell structure: growth, reproduction, metabolism. 1665: cells are first discovered by robert hooke: later anton van leeuwenhoek expanded on this. Cell theory: all organisms are made up of cells, the cell is the fundamental unit of life, cells come from pre-existing cells. Biology: the science of how life works: scope is very large, six main concepts: Contain a blueprint of genetic information in molecular form (generally dna) Discrete boundary which separates the inside of the cell from the outside world. Have the ability to harness materials and energy from the environment. Done via a process of transcription and translation. Describes the basic flow of information in a cell: gene: a section of dna which codes for a specific protein, dna can also be replicated exactly and quickly.
