Document Summary

Strategy of assessment: the assessment of jealousy should take place both in joint and in individual sessions. It is important to interview each partner individually and elicit relevant information: some information may not be easy for a partner to provide in the presence of the other (e. g. threats of violence, fear of violence, previous affairs). In individual sessions, in-depth enquiry needs to be made into key aspects of the problem as needed. In many clinical cases, much of the initial information usually comes from the target, or victim, partner: the jealous partner is often slow to be forthcoming, and it will take time to win his/her confidence and trust. Joint sessions are needed as part of the assessment as this enables the therapist to observe the interactions of the couple when discussing the jealousy. It helps to validate information gathered from individual interviews: this, ho(cid:449)e(cid:448)er, u(cid:374)der(cid:373)i(cid:374)es o(cid:374)e(cid:859)s status as a(cid:374) u(cid:374)(cid:271)iased helper, a(cid:374)d is.
