Document Summary

There has been a tremendous increase in the number of practicing social workers and social service workers over the past 50 year. This reflects not only the need for their services but the complex nature of western societies today. Certainly, without the efforts of committed social work practitioners, the day-to-day lives of a great many canadian individuals and families would be much worse. Increasingly, the task of the social work practitioner is legally defined or mandated and guided by professional standards. More often than not, however, situations arise for which there are no clear law of precedents. This is why values, training, and approach are so important and why there has been a significant expansion in the accreditation of social workers all colleges and universities. The task of the social worker is to simultaneously act in the best interest of their clients and adhere to agency policies and procedures.
