Kinds of culture: culture can be seen in terms of two oppositions: (1) dominant culture versus subculture and counterculture (2) high culture versus popular culture and mass culture. Counter- culture: groups that feel the power of the dominant culture and exist in opposition to it. Subculture: groups which differ in some way from the dominant culture but don"t directly oppose it: subculture examples could include computer nerds, stamp collectors, etc, 1960s hippies, goths counter culture. High culture: the culture of the elite, a distinct minority; associated with theatre, opera, classical music, etc . Cultural capital: the knowledge and skills needed to acquire the sophisticated tastes that mark someone as a person of high culture. Popular culture: the culture of the majority, particularly of those people who don"t have power. Cultural studies: draws on both the social science and humanities to cast light on the significance of, and meanings expressed in, popular culture.
